At the time, I was employed by IBM as a Field Engineer – their “first woman” in a job traditionally held by men. If you are old enough to remember keypunches and unit record equipment, I was the “guy” who arrived with the tool bag to fix your machines. Although I was recruited in Lakehurst, my first assignment was at NAS Willowgrove in Pennsylvania. I hated it. It seemed that all we ever did was muster – four times a day – and I got stuck in an ET shack on the outer perimeter of the base reworking old hardware in a depressing, window-less cement block building. You know what I’m talking about, and it was certainly not (his (woman’s) “Navy”. I longed for something more and I longed to connect with my father. My dad, Crandall Price Franklin, was a machinist’s mate who served on a destroyer in the Pacific during WWII. He passed to Glory before I was recruited, and after that short stint at NAS Willowgrove, I asked my Captain (a real USN captain in rank) to let me switch from Airdale to Blackshoe. Through him, I re-enlisted and was transferred to Sima 102, out of Little Creek, Virginia. We drilled in Bayonne, New Jersey, on the Fiske, occasionally on the USS Kalamazoo, at the Brooklyn Naval Yard (when the ships were out to sea), and at wet away weekends at our home port in Little Creek, Virginia. My heart was always with the Fiske. In addition to whatever the Captain wanted done that particular weekend, my main duties were to calibrate the repeaters in CIC, and to work on the Missy 29 radar system. Weekend shipmates were kind, friendly, and professional, although (at the time) I was the only woman in my unit. I regret that I was unable to fulfill many of my obligations due to some private personal problems which were further complicated by moving to Florida and starting a new life. However, the times that I was able to drill were the happiest and proudest moments of my life. When I wandered the decks of the Fiske, I was taken back to another time. I thought about my father and his service to our country through the ferocious battles in the Pacific. I thought about the action the Fiske had seen, and I was humbled. Several years later, through the efforts of my sister, Dad was buried, with full military honors, off the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Although I was never a "real" sailor, I have an honest heritage from a long line of family in the Navy, all of whom were proud to serve and willing to sacrifice. On a side note, my great-uncle, Simon Lake, was a US Naval architect and engineer, having invented the first practical submarine. My only son, David Sutton, is a test pilot who trains naval pilots at Patuxent River NAS, in addition to other endeavors; my brother was on the nucleur sub, the USS Casmir Pulaski, and my brother-in-law was career Navy out of Norfolk. This should give you an idea of my family’s commitment, and how naval traditions have enriched my life. If I am an imposter, I’m darned well proud to be one! Personally, I am used to being the “first” or “only” woman on the job, or in the crew, but, as such, I am in awe of the rest of you - who served - long and faithful - who protected me, as a child, and who preserved the freedom we all enjoy today. Thank you so much! For this reason, I am proud and happy to be able to contribute, in some small way, to our association. John W. "Duke" Highsmith. Really enjoyed the tour of duty in our wonderful "Port-of-Call" Bayonne, NJ. Hard to imagine after two years of seeing the World Trade Center towers from our vantage point in Bayonne that they are no longer there. Won't ever forget our change in Mardi Gras locations when we thought we were getting the bad end of the deal when we had to go to Mobile, AL instead of New Orleans. We had a blast because the New Orleans Mardi Gras was really watered down because of a police strike there. Mobile was great! Enjoyed my extra month on board Fiske after she became the Piyalapasa (Turkish Navy) as part of the turn-over crew. Won't ever forget the way the decks looked the day after turning over the ship to them. We had all the passageways and berthing space decks shined so well you could shave in them and the next morning the Turkish conscripts were pouring wax on the decks and running buffers on the wet wax making a real big mess. All in all it was a great career (retired as an LDO Supply Corps Lieutenant) and a great time on Fiske. WALTER F.
